Best Time to Move in Vancouver (and What to Avoid)
Vancouver's moving season has a predictable rhythm that most people only discover after they have already booked during the worst time. Here is what to know before you pick your date.
The Busy Season: May Through September
Summer is peak moving season in Vancouver, for the same reasons it is everywhere: school breaks, lease cycles, and better weather. July and August are the absolute peak — moving companies book out 3–4 weeks in advance during this period, and the best crews are scheduled earliest. If your move is in July or August, book a minimum of three weeks out, preferably more.
May and June are also busy — university students ending leases, families trying to move before school starts, and the spring rental market driving high turnover. September sees a second wave as new academic-year leases begin.
Month-End Is the Busiest Single Period
In BC, most residential tenancies run month-to-month and end on the last day of the month. This means the last week of every month — and the first few days of the next — is the single busiest moving period in Vancouver, every month of the year. The end of July and end of August see the highest demand of all.
If your lease requires an end-of-month move, you have no flexibility. But if you can negotiate a mid-month end date, do it. Moving on the 15th instead of the 30th typically means immediate booking availability, less competition for elevator time, and a more relaxed crew.
The Best Time to Move: October Through April (Weekdays)
October through April is the least busy period in Vancouver's moving calendar. Demand drops significantly, availability is high, and booking a weekday move in this window gives you the most options. You can often book a week or less in advance.
The tradeoff is weather. Vancouver's rainy season runs November through March, and a wet move day requires extra care with items that cannot get wet. Good movers come prepared — waterproof truck tarps, plastic wrap for mattresses, and moving blankets for furniture. BOSS Moving handles rain moves routinely; it slows things down slightly but does not stop the job.
Weekday vs. Weekend: What It Means for Your Move
Weekday moves — Monday through Thursday — consistently book earlier and complete more efficiently than weekend moves. The reason: less traffic during loading and unloading, easier parking, and building access with fewer competing residents using elevators and hallways.
Weekend moves are necessary for many people who work standard hours. There is no price difference — BOSS Moving charges the same hourly rate regardless of day. But if you have flexibility, a Tuesday or Wednesday move typically runs smoother than a Saturday one.
