Moving in Delta
Delta is a municipality of three distinct communities: Tsawwassen in the south (a mix of established single-family homes and newer Tsawwassen Mills-area development), Ladner at the mouth of the Fraser River (a tight-knit community with older heritage homes and newer builds), and North Delta bordering Surrey to the north.
Delta moves are primarily single-family homes — there is comparatively little high-rise condo density here. Most moves involve standard residential loading from driveways and garages. The drive from Vancouver to Delta via Highway 99 takes approximately 30–40 minutes, which we factor into your hourly estimate upfront.
What makes Delta unusual is that those three communities are not neighbours in any practical sense. They are separated by farmland and bog, and the road between them goes around rather than through. A mover who treats “Delta” as one service area will underestimate an intra-Delta job and overestimate a Ladner-to-Richmond one. We quote the three separately because in every way that affects a moving truck, they are three places.

Delta's Unique Moving Challenges
Delta is, on balance, one of the easier municipalities in the region to move in — it is flat and most homes load from a driveway. The difficulties are about getting there and getting between, not about the houses themselves.
Three communities, one municipality, real distance between them
Tsawwassen sits at the far southwest corner, Ladner in the middle by the river, and North Delta up against the Surrey boundary. Between them lies agricultural land, and the road network reflects that rather than fighting it. The practical consequence is that an intra-Delta move can involve more driving than a move out of Delta entirely, which runs against most people's intuition and against the way most quotes are built. We ask which of the three you are in before anything else.
The tunnel, the highway and the ferry queue
Nearly every move between Delta and the rest of the region passes a chokepoint. The George Massey Tunnel is the obvious one: height-restricted, counterflow, and congested at predictable hours. Highway 17 carries the Deltaport container traffic alongside everyone heading for a sailing, and on summer weekends and long-weekend Fridays the ferry queue itself becomes a road condition. None of this makes a Delta move difficult; it makes the start time matter. We book earlier here than we would for an equivalent job closer in.
Ladner Village heritage stock and rear-lane access
The older core of Ladner has narrow streets, small lots, and houses built when a driveway was optional. Some properties genuinely load better from the rear lane than the street, and knowing which is the difference between a smooth morning and a long carry. The interiors follow the same pattern — steep stairs, tight turns at the landing, and door frames that a modern sectional will not pass without coming apart. We would rather bring the tools to dismantle it than find out at the door.
Rural addresses and the flat-ground advantage
A good portion of Delta is farmland, so some addresses are genuinely rural: long private driveways, gravel surfaces, and ground that softens after a wet week. We ask about the driveway surface for these, because a loaded truck on soft gravel is a problem that takes a tow truck to solve. Against that, the rest of Delta offers something the North Shore never does — flat, level, ground-floor access at both ends. Most Delta moves land at the fast end of their bracket for exactly that reason.
How Long a Delta Move Takes

Cross-City Moves From Delta

- Delta → Richmond: 15–30 minutes through the Massey Tunnel, and almost entirely dependent on when you cross rather than how far you go.
- Delta → Surrey: 10–25 minutes from North Delta, longer from Tsawwassen. North Delta and North Surrey effectively share a boundary at Scott Road.
- Delta → Vancouver: 30–45 minutes via Highway 99 and the tunnel. The unload side usually decides this job, not the drive.
- Delta → Langley: 30–45 minutes east along Highway 10 or the freeway, avoiding the tunnel entirely.
- Delta → White Rock: 20–30 minutes south along the coast. A common downsizing route and a straightforward one.

The hourly rate is identical wherever you are going; what changes is the travel time on the quote. How does the George Massey Tunnel affect a Delta move?
It is the pinch point on almost any move between Delta and Richmond or Vancouver. The tunnel carries a posted height restriction, runs counterflow so its capacity changes direction through the day, and backs up on a schedule that is predictable enough to plan around. We route and time loaded crossings deliberately rather than defaulting to whatever a map suggests. Since you are billed for the hours the job takes, sitting in a tunnel queue is a cost we have every reason to avoid.
Do you move to and from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal?
Yes. We handle the mainland side of an Island or Gulf Islands move — loading, delivery, and timing coordinated to your sailing. The thing to plan for is the queue rather than the terminal: on summer weekends and long-weekend Fridays the line for a sailing reaches back along Highway 17 and affects the local approach roads. Give us your sailing time and we will schedule backwards from it, which usually means an earlier start than you would otherwise pick.
Can you handle heritage homes in Ladner Village?
Regularly. Ladner Village was laid out long before the modern moving truck, and it shows: narrow streets, short or absent driveways, some properties better served from the rear lane than the front, and older interiors with tight staircases and narrow door frames. None of that is a problem when it is known in advance.
