Front doors that are a staircase from the street
Hillside lots put a great many West Vancouver front doors a full storey above or below the road, reached by an outdoor stair. It is a beautiful way to build a house and a slow way to move one, because every item makes the climb individually and nothing can be wheeled. Post-and-beam and split-level homes compound it internally, with half-flights between living areas. Ambleside and Dundarave walk-ups and village parking
The older low-rise apartment stock along Marine Drive and Bellevue Avenue is largely walk-up — no elevator, narrow stairwells, tight landings that oversized furniture has to be angled through rather than carried straight. Street parking through both village cores is limited and actively used, so a truck-length space in front of the building on a weekday morning is not something to count on. West of Caulfeild the roads narrow and the lots get steeper as they drop toward the water. Overhanging trees are the other frequent limit — plenty of driveways are wide enough and still too low. We would rather park at the street and carry, or run a smaller shuttle vehicle up, than wedge a truck somewhere it cannot leave. How does the Lions Gate Bridge affect my move?
It sets the schedule more than the distance does. The bridge is three lanes running counterflow, so its capacity changes direction through the day and a crossing that takes minutes off-peak can take far longer in the wrong direction at the wrong hour.
