Vancouver is our home city. Boss Moving works out of Kitsilano, which means most jobs on the west side and through the central neighbourhoods are a short run for the crew, and the travel block on your quote reflects that rather than a flat regional guess. It is a small operational detail that shows up on the invoice.
The city has the most mixed housing stock in the region, and that is what makes moving here different from moving in the suburbs. On one job the constraint is a booked freight elevator and a strata that wants paperwork before it releases the key. On the next it is a 1920s house with a staircase that turns at the landing and no driveway to back into. Most suburban municipalities lean heavily one way or the other; Vancouver does not, so the right crew size and the right truck are decided address by address.

What Vancouver Moves Actually Involve
Four things account for nearly every Vancouver move that runs long, and all four are predictable if the crew has worked the city before.
Tower buildings: the elevator decides the day
Through Downtown, the West End, Yaletown, Coal Harbour and False Creek, the binding constraint is almost never the furniture — it is the elevator. Most buildings require it to be booked ahead, restrict moves to fixed windows, and want a Certificate of Insurance naming the strata before they release it. Miss the window and the move does not simply start late, it may not start at all that day. The older West End rental towers add their own wrinkle: they tend to have a single shared service elevator rather than a dedicated one, and arrangements are often made through a building manager rather than a management portal, so the lead time and the process differ building to building. We confirm yours in advance instead of assuming.
Loading: the truck usually cannot get underground
Parkade loading bays in most downtown towers are height-restricted well below the height of a moving truck. The practical consequence is that the truck stays at street level or in the marked loading zone and everything travels further than the floor plan suggests — through a lobby, along a corridor, into a service elevator. This is routine work and it is priced by the hour, so the only thing that goes wrong is when nobody planned for it. Where a building has a genuine loading bay that fits, we use it.
Character homes and walk-ups: stairs, turns and narrow frames
Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Commercial Drive, Grandview-Woodland and Strathcona hold a dense concentration of pre-war and mid-century wood-frame housing, much of it divided into suites. The recurring constraints are consistent: stairwells that turn ninety degrees at the landing, doorframes narrower than modern sectionals and mattresses, and rear-lane access that is excellent on some blocks and unusable on others. A large piece often has to be dismantled rather than angled. We ask about oversized furniture at quoting time because it changes the crew size, not because it changes the rate.
Parking, permits and enforcement
The City of Vancouver operates its own street-use permitting and metered-space reservation process for moving trucks — the surrounding municipalities are looser about this, which catches out crews and customers who have only moved in the suburbs. Requirements, costs and lead times vary by street and change over time, so we check the specific address rather than repeating a rule of thumb. Downtown and along the Davie and Denman corridors, enforcement is active and there is no informal grace period for a truck in a no-stopping zone. How Long a Vancouver Move Takes
Move-only estimates for the standard 2-mover crew, before travel. These are the figures our quoting system works from, so the range here is the range you will be quoted.

- 1 bedroom: 3.5–4.5 hours. The typical Vancouver condo move.

Vancouver has more walk-up housing than most of the region, so the top of that range applies more often here than people expect.
Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Vancouver?

Can your truck park at my downtown or West End building?
Often not in the underground, and that is normal rather than a problem. Parkade loading bays in most downtown and Coal Harbour towers are height-restricted below the height of a moving truck, so the truck stays at street level or in the designated loading zone and the crew works from there. It changes the carry, not the rate. Give us the building name when you book and we will confirm the loading arrangement, the elevator window and any paperwork in advance.
Do Vancouver strata buildings need a Certificate of Insurance?
Most of them do, and the requirement is stricter downtown, in Yaletown, Coal Harbour and False Creek than almost anywhere else we work. Strata corporations typically want a COI naming the corporation as additionally insured before they will release the elevator. How far in advance should I book movers in Vancouver?
Two to three weeks for a standard move, four to six for month-end and especially for June 30 and September 30, the two busiest moving days in BC. Vancouver runs tighter than the suburbs for one specific reason: in the tower neighbourhoods your date is often decided by the elevator booking rather than by our availability, and at month-end those slots go early. If you are in a walk-up or a house, late booking is far more forgiving.
Can you move a Kitsilano or East Vancouver character home?
Regularly — it is a large share of what we do. The pre-war and mid-century wood-frame houses through Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Commercial Drive and Strathcona share a set of constraints: narrow stairwells that turn at the landing, doorframes built before modern furniture existed, and short or absent driveways with lane access that varies block to block. None of it is difficult with notice. Flag any oversized pieces when you request a quote and the crew arrives with the tools to take them apart and put them back together.
Do you provide packing services in Vancouver?
Yes — full or partial packing, plus boxes, bubble wrap and mattress bags. The same crew packs on the same clock at the same hourly rate, so there is no separate packing rate stacked on top. A packed job genuinely takes longer, so we quote it from a higher total-hours figure at the outset, with no materials fee on top. Blankets, straps and dollies are ours and never reach your bill; boxes and wrap are quoted once we have seen what there is to pack. If anyone quotes you packing as an extra hourly line running alongside the crew rate, the same hours are being billed twice.
