How We Move Pianos
Pianos are among the most challenging items to move — they are extremely heavy (an upright piano typically weighs 200–500 lbs, a grand piano 500–1,200 lbs), fragile in their internal mechanism, and awkward in shape. Moving one incorrectly risks permanent damage to the soundboard, strings, or cabinet.
Our crew uses a professional piano dolly rated for the weight, thick moving blankets wrapped around all surfaces, and heavy-duty ratchet straps to keep the instrument stable during transit. For grand pianos, we remove the legs and lid before moving and reassemble at the destination.
We always carry the piano vertically on its side (for uprights) or on the dolly in its disassembled state (for grands) — never flat or on its back, which can damage the internal mechanism.
Piano Types We Move
Upright Piano
Spinet, console, studio, upright grand — all sizes. Most common residential piano move.
Baby Grand Piano
Legs removed, lid secured, wrapped and dollied. Reassembled at destination.
Grand Piano
Full disassembly of legs, pedal lyre, and lid. Requires adequate door clearance (52" minimum).

Frequently Asked Questions About Piano Moving
How much does it cost to move a piano in Vancouver?
Piano moving in Vancouver is handled as part of our standard hourly rate — $140/hr for 2 movers + truck, with a 2-hour minimum. Most upright piano moves within Metro Vancouver are completed within the 2-hour minimum. Grand pianos and moves requiring stair navigation may take longer. No hidden piano surcharge — the price you see is the price you pay.
Can you move a grand piano or baby grand?
Yes. Boss Moving moves upright pianos, baby grands, and full grand pianos across Metro Vancouver. Grand pianos require disassembly of the legs and lid before moving — our crew is trained for this process. We bring specialized piano dollies, heavy-duty moving blankets, and strapping to protect the instrument throughout.
Do I need to hire a piano tuner after the move?
Yes — all pianos need tuning after a move, regardless of how carefully they're moved. Moving changes the temperature, humidity, and orientation of the instrument, which affects string tension. We recommend booking a piano tuner 2–4 weeks after the move to allow the piano to acclimate to its new environment first.
What if there are stairs involved in the piano move?
Stairs are manageable for most upright pianos with the right crew and equipment. We assess stair width, landing size, and number of flights when quoting. For grand pianos on stairs, we evaluate on a case-by-case basis. Call 778-601-9555 to describe your specific staircase and we can advise before booking.
