Moving in Port Coquitlam
Port Coquitlam — known locally as PoCo — is the smallest of the Tri-Cities but has a strong identity as a family-oriented, primarily residential community. The housing mix skews toward single-family homes and townhouses, with higher-density pockets near the town centre along Shaughnessy Street and the West Coast Express station.
PoCo moves to and from Vancouver follow the Lougheed Highway or the Trans-Canada, typically adding 35–45 minutes of travel time. Within the Tri-Cities — between Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, and Port Moody — travel times are short, and we handle many intra-Tri-Cities moves each month.
Geographically PoCo is the opposite of its larger neighbour. Coquitlam climbs; Port Coquitlam sits flat in the valley where the Coquitlam and Pitt Rivers meet, with only Mary Hill and Citadel rising above the plain. For a moving crew that flatness is worth real money — level driveways, level approaches, no loaded descents to think about. Most of what makes a Tri-Cities move slow is absent here.
The Citadel and Oxford Heights areas are popular with families moving up from apartments into their first detached home. These moves often involve more volume than the standard apartment move — we recommend a 3-mover crew for 3-bedroom detached homes to keep the move within a reasonable time window.
Port Coquitlam's Unique Moving Challenges
PoCo is among the more forgiving cities in the region to move in. The things that do catch crews out are specific and local, and none of them are about the houses.
The rail yard and the level crossings
This is the one thing that makes Port Coquitlam genuinely different from every other municipality we serve. A working rail yard runs through the middle of the city, and several routes cross the tracks at grade. A stopped freight can close a crossing for long enough to matter, and when it happens it happens to a loaded truck with a crew on the clock. The Coast Meridian Overpass exists precisely because this was a persistent problem for the city. We plan PoCo routes around the grade crossings rather than through them — it is unremarkable local knowledge and it saves real money on the invoice.
Flat ground, and what that is worth
Worth stating plainly because it works in your favour: most of Port Coquitlam is level, driveways meet the street at a sane angle, and the housing is overwhelmingly ground-access. There is no equivalent here of a switchback estate driveway or a hillside front door up a full storey of outdoor stairs. A PoCo job of a given bedroom count will typically finish nearer the bottom of its hour range than the same job in the hillside municipalities, and we quote it that way.
Mary Hill, Citadel and the bluffs above the rivers
The exceptions to the flat rule are Mary Hill and Citadel Heights, which sit on the bluffs above the Pitt and Fraser. Streets climbing these have steeper grades and some properties are split-level with the garage below the living space. It is a mild version of what the hillside cities deal with rather than a serious constraint, but it is enough that we ask about interior stairs on a Citadel or Mary Hill quote rather than assuming the flat-city default.
New townhouse complexes and the internal drive aisle
The newer strata townhouse development around Fremont and the eastern edge of the city shares a design pattern with new complexes everywhere: internal aisles sized for cars, visitor parking clustered near the entrance rather than at the units. That turns into a longer carry than the floor plan suggests, and it is the single most common reason a townhouse move runs past its estimate. Give us the complex name at quoting time and we will check the layout before quoting the hours.
How Long a Port Coquitlam Move Takes

Yes, more than the shared name suggests. Coquitlam climbs — Burke Mountain and Westwood Plateau sit hundreds of metres up, and elevation drives both the truck routing and the winter risk there. Port Coquitlam is a flat river-valley city, so those problems largely do not arise. What PoCo has instead are the rail crossings and a housing stock skewed toward modest detached homes and townhouses rather than towers. Different city, different job, even though they share a border.
Do you move the newer townhouse complexes near Fremont and Dominion?
Regularly. The newer development in the north and east of the city is largely strata townhouse, and the recurring constraint is the internal drive aisle — many are sized for cars, with visitor parking well away from the units. The practical result is a longer carry from wherever the truck can legally and safely sit. Tell us the complex name when you book and we will check the layout and bring the crew size that suits the carry rather than only the bedroom count.
Do you provide packing services in Port Coquitlam?
Yes — full or partial packing, plus boxes, bubble wrap and mattress bags. Packing is done by the same crew, on the same clock, at the same hourly rate. There is no separate packing rate.
